Stephen Robert Parris died peacefully at his home after a lengthy battle with prostate cancer on February 8, 2020, in Hurst, Texas at the age of 63.
Steve is survived by his wife of 36 years, Kerrin Hendren Parris; his daughter, Kathryn Layne Parris Coleman and her husband, James;his son, Joseph Stephen Parris and his wife, Sarah; his beloved granddaughter, Sophie Layne Parris; and his brother, Michael J. Parris and his wife Donna.He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph E. Parris and Pauline Speck Parris.
Steve was born on October 17, 1956, in Ashiya, Japan at Ashiya Air Force Base where his father was stationed.He was a graduate of Central High School in Columbia, TN; Tennessee Technological University and obtained his law degree from Memphis State University. He married his law school sweetheart, Kerrin on September 3, 1983.
Steve practiced law in Columbia, Tennessee from 1981 - 1991. He was in private practice for a brief time before he became an Assistant District Attorney General.Steve and Kerrin moved their family to Texas in 1991 and he was a prosecutor for the Tarrant County District Attorney's office.In 1992, he joined State Farm Insurance's Claims Litigation Counsel in Dallas, Texas (Paul Van Ness & Associates and Suzanne Calvert & Associates). He worked there for 25 years until his medical condition required him to retire in 2017.
Steve loved being with his family and friends, traveling, entertaining, canoeing, and backpacking.He enjoyed any occasion where he could wear a seersucker suit and dance to the song Brick House. He was a dedicated member of First United Methodist Church in Arlington, Texas where he taught Sunday School for many years. He previously taught Disciple Bible Study. His dearest and closest friends are the members of the Rainbow Sunday School Class. He also taught Sunday School on a guest basis for the Theopolites Class at St. Barnabus United Methodist Church.
A celebration of his life is scheduled for 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, February 15, 2020, at First United Methodist Church, 313 North Center Street, Arlington, Texas.
