Herbert Anton Tischler was born June 10, 1927 in Teublitz, Germany and passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 30, 2019 in Fort Worth, Texas.
Proceeded in death by his father, Wenzeslaous Tischler, and his mother, Rosa Tischler, and his wife of 62 years, Gladys Alicia Tischler.He is survived by his son Heinrich Tischler and his wife JanaRuth, son George Tischler, daughter Kathy Reeves and her husband Clayton Reeves. Also survived by 5 grandchildren Andrew, Allison, Jessica, Zackary, and Rebecca, and 6 great-grandchildren, Emmett, Scarlett, Nathaniel, Archer, Ella, and Arron.
He was awarded a Luftwaffe scholarship in Berlin during World War II. After D-Day, he was inducted into military service and served as a Luftwaffe Cadet during the last months of the war. On May 9, 1945 the German 2nd Army surrendered to the Soviet Army, when he became a Prisoner of War prior to his eighteenth birthday.
Quickly learning the Russian language, Herbert became a translator between the Soviet camp leaders and his fellow POWs. Released in Oct 1949, he returned to his Bayern home, and eventual joined the United States Air Force in Europe and was assigned the 85th Air Depot Wing at Erding AFB.
In early 1954, he traveled to Ecuador to work for a small airline, to repair their aircraft.There he met Gladys Alicia Yerovi, whom he married on July 24, 1954.Moving to Florida in late 1957, he eventually sent up his own aircraft repair shop, where he worked on damaged aircraft from the local flight schools and other aviation projects.
Moving to Omaha, Nebraska in 1971, he built a P-6E for a local businessman.In 1973, he and his family were finally relocated to Greeneville, Tennessee, where he worked on several aviation projects until 1981.
He finally settled in Fort Worth in 1985 and set up his shop at Meacham Field.
Herbert always appreciated Doug Champlin for his support of projects that led to the formation of Texas Airplane Factory. Herbert received, national and international attention for the unique work performed under his guidance and his watchful eye for detail.
Herbert and Gladys are long time members of Ridglea Presbyterian Church.They enjoyed traveling and had memorable trips here in the United States, as well as, South America and Europe with family and friends.He enjoyed attending various German-American activities in the Metroplex and has a special talent for cooking potato and bread dumplings as well as Bavarian sauerkraut, which were usually available at various functions with family, friends, and at work.
Herbert was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved life and was always looking for a way to pull a "gotcha" on his friends. He also loved his dogs and enjoyed cooking for them. Because of this, in lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be given to Humane Society of North Texas.
A Memorial Service (Celebration of Life) will be held at Ridglea Presbyterian Church, 4350 River Oaks Blvd., Fort Worth, Texas 76114 on May 21, 2019, at 2:30 pm
